Wooden Sculptures
I’m always experimenting with the use of various types of wood and this is mainly because I love the beauty of the grain. I do have a preference for using hardwoods but this is because of it’s strength and durability.
There is an abundance of hardwoods to choose from and some are more expensive and more exotic than others. But when I’m sculpting in wood I always try to incorporate curves & contours which highlight the grain of the wood that I’m using.
Some of my designs may be considered fairly abstract and contemporary, others tend to follow a more traditional look. Either way I get enjoyment from turning a plain piece of wood into something of beauty and something very tactile to the touch.

Clay Sculptures
The technique employed for this alternative medium is completely different to that of carving wood. I usually begin by creating a metal/wire armature in the shape of my proposed sculpture.
This acts as a structural support for the weight of the clay during the building & drying process. I then add clay to the armature until the sculpture begins to take on the desired form. There are a number of sculpting clays available on the market but I prefer to use a good quality air-dry clay because of the drying time and it’s versatility.

Other Mixed Medium
In the past I’ve tried to put my skills to the test by painting in oils & acrylics. I’m not really sure about how successful I’ve been and it may be something I return to from time to time.
I’ve also included other materials such as stone or metal in some of my artwork to emphasise the meaning of the piece in question. Again, I might decide to continue experimenting with other mixed mediums in the future so watch this space!
